The former yellows-reds coach added, “If a fan had pushed or punched a Parma player, we would have lost the match, and therefore all the work done.”

During the show ‘Stories of Serie A’, Fabio Capello recalled winning the championship with Roma in the 2000-2001 season. Here’s what he had to say:

“It was challenging, because the other teams were very competitive until the end. Challenging for the environment too, given the enthusiasm in Roma when they win, whereas when things go south, it’s perceived as a catastrophe. The issue lies in the vocal radio channels, constantly discussing football the whole day, in every taxi and in every home. So much so, that in my first press conference in Rome, I stated that I wouldn’t be doing interviews or speaking with the radio stations within the ring road. And to my surprise, everyone was in favor of this. However, we did tremendously well. We succeeded in achieving a commendable league standing in the first year. Subsequently, in the second year, we acquired Batistuta, understanding that we needed a robust and capable forward. We rightfully won the championship with merit. However, the greatest danger of that championship was the last match, as with ten minutes to go, the field was rushed while we were winning 3-1 against Parma. Nobody understood the danger of that invasion, done in celebration. If a fan had shoved or punched a Parma player, we would have lost the match and hence all the work done would have gone down the drain. Indeed, I don’t think I have ever been as outraged in my life with fans who did not understand the dangers. They just didn’t get it. But it wasn’t just the fans, even some of those who were with me on the bench were completely clueless. “I was the only one in the middle of the field, screaming like a madman with expletives that cannot be repeated. It turned out well, but what an effort!”
